Project on Efficiency Enhancement for Energy and Resources Recovery from Kitchen Waste

Absrtact
The main purpose of this plan is to improve the performance of kitchen waste treatment plants in various counties and cities, including the improvement of the composting plant, as well as to evaluate the effectiveness of pre-crushing treatment facilities, and to assess the overall treatment efficiency of high-efficiency fermentation facilities that can enhance the traditional composting performance. Among them, evaluation of 5 cruching-dewatering facilities has been completed, include quality testing analysis, mass balance and effectiveness assessment. In the “high-efficiency composting facility” section, 10 facilities had been inspected, including the energy efficiency evaluation and the quality analysis of product from those facilities. At the same time, expert members are invited to 10 traditional composting plants, to survey and assist to improve the treatment efficiency, provide relevant improvement recommendations and complete follow-up. In terms of the cultivation of bacteria sources in high-efficiency composting plants, the plan completed the detection of fermented strains and the analysis of the number of fungi in the systems of high-efficiency composting facilities, and compared them with traditional composting plants. It was found that the number of bacteria in the self-cultivating microbial solution was similar to the commercial products but it could not reach the number of fungi. Therefore, it was suggested that the self-cultivating microbial solution could supple with the product of the traditional composting plant, and to increase the fungi group, therefor can replace partial of commercial bacteria to reduce the bacteria purchase cost in the high-efficiency composting facilities. This plan also studied the potential of co-digestion of kitchen waste with the sewage treatment plant and pig waste treatment plan. The pretreatment facility and treatment process were recommended. In order to assist local government to select appropriate equipment in planning kitchen waste composting plant, this plan proposed the standardized composting treatment facilities, including the basic specifications of pre-treatment facilities, fermentation facilities, pollution prevention facilities and other relative equipment. Meanwhile, the standardized facilities specifications of dehydration facility and high-efficient fermentation were also proposed, to provide local government as guidance for future facilities construction and purchase the relative facilities. In respect of administrative work, one visit to the kitchen treatment and resource facilities has been conducted and co-operating with the EPA to held the business review meeting in this December. This project also completed the accommodation planning, related conference and registration information preparation for the 8th International Conference on Sustainable Solid Waste Management, held in Thessaloniki, Greece from 23 to 26 June 2021 for the follow-up visit planning.
